I have been practicing yoga and meditation for many years and have just discovered Kum Nye practice as a wonderful addition and wondered if anyone else has tried this form of buddhist practice?

I have found Kum Nye to be a wonderful method for improving my meditation practice and as an aid to connecting with what is going on within my body and my emotions.
I heartily recommend it as a whole new practice which has improved my whole life. Although it does not seem as dynamic as yoga at first it offers so much on so many levels. |

Apart for the contacts listed on this site does anyone know where I might find someone to teach Kum Nye in London or the Home Counties?
I have some limited experience from a workshop in Devon but it’s a bit far to go for regular classes/instruction. |

The style taught by Ms Wright is not traditional Kum Nye but an obscure form more akin to yoga. I feel that Bon Kum Nye is NOT genuine Kum Nye but is perhaps a useful form of exercise which only touches on the true form. Anyone interested in Kum Nye might like to read the Tarthang Tulku books on the subject, especially Part 1. |

Hi!!!
I am SaraLisa in Sweden - i have been learning from alternative medicine treatment the last 9 years-and now I have discovered the Kum Nye massage treatment. I can warmly recommend a very good video with practical training from Dr. NIDA CHENAGTSANG -it can be delivered from the ShangShung institute in Italy where he also give class.I think the Ku Nye is a good complement together with the everyday training we all should do-to stay in good health.
GOOD LUCK!!! Namaste

The centre is listed on this site, just do a search for Kum Nye in the box on the right and then select London etc. Remember that the Kum Nye they teach is not the same as the Buddhist take on Kum Nye. It is Bon Kum Nye which was a method used to train soldiers. |

It is an interesting thought, Bon Kum Nye existed before Buddhism, (well Buddha anyway) and it is said that Kum Nye existed before Bon!
I think it's a bit harsh to simply label Bon Kum Nye as military training though, it seems to offer much more than that. The style taught by Ms Wright and is now a commercial copyrighted form!! So anyone considering learning an ancient form of army training now has to bow to western greed and ownership!
The "real" or un-comercialy clean form is on offer by a limited number of teachers in the UK. It is not suited to 1 or 2 hour classes but is the bees knees! |

Bon Kum Nye is actualy a fusion between Siberian and Tibetan (buddhist) forms. I agree that copyrighting it is almost criminal. This said the tibetan form is not and I doubt if any chalenge would stand up in court.

I have also been a long time yoga practioner and have also recently started including kum nye in my daily routine and I am really enjoying the added benefits on all levels. I've found it has deepened my understanding of yoga as well as working on a deeper level enabling me to release deep held tensions and negative thoughts. In the last two weeks I,ve noticed I feel more energetic and definitley more relaxed and happy. I can only marvel at what benefits the next 2 weeks of practice will bring. I highly recommend this practice to all. |

I have read in the book Kum Nye by Stephanie Wright that the breath pattern throughout the Kum Nye is in through the nose and out through the mouth. But, I think that Tharthang Tulku has written that the method of breathing should be simultaneous through the nose and the mouth. So, is there a kind of controversy Edited 27/07/2007 23:25:31 by Alex Edited 27/07/2007 23:27:20 by Alex |

Can I offer my two cents worth......
The Kum Nye in tibetan buddhist medical texts, and what is generally understood by Tibetan doctors is predominantely a form of therapeutic massage. Tarthang Tulku has devised a system of exercises suited to Westerners ( he has lived in California for some time) which he has called Kum Nye.Due to the popularity of his books which teach these exercises most people now equate traditional Kum Nye with these exercises.
Bon Kum Nye....well, if Stephanie Wright has learnt these practices from Christopher Hansard, I would urge people to look very closely into the lineage and authenticity of its transmission.

I think you are right about qualifying views....that's the reason I didn't want to say anything more about Hansard and his authenticity here. I thought if I just said what I feel about people checking him out, it would lead to them uncovering 'stuff' for themselves. And more of this 'stuff' is coming out now.
Take care

Why would anyone wish to state that they 'feel' Bon kumnye is not genuine? Even if one had some information that might tend in that diretcion it would be unwise to make such a statement. There are at least two lineages of kumnye within Bon and several within the Nyingma School. |
